Overview

What it is

Atoven is a 15 W GaAlAs diode laser at 1470 nm, built for endovenous laser ablation of superficial venous reflux. At this wavelength light is absorbed by water in the hydrated cells of the vein wall rather than by haemoglobin, so the vein wall contracts and occludes at markedly lower power than 810–980 nm systems require.

System components — Console 200 (W) × 430 (D) × 175 (H) mm, 110/240 V 50–60 Hz 650 VA, foot pedal switch, 600 µm and 400 µm fibres.

Indications

  • Endovenous laser ablation of superficial venous reflux
  • Varicose vein treatment
  • Soft-tissue procedures within the cleared indications

Capability

Key features

  1. Water absorption, not haemoglobin

The absorption coefficient of 1470 nm in water is far higher than 1320 nm. Energy goes into the vein wall itself, which is what allows comparable efficacy to 810–980 nm lasers at lower power.

  2. Lower power, fewer side effects

The manufacturer reports reduced paraesthesia, bruising, intra-operative discomfort and thermal injury to overlying skin compared with shorter-wavelength endovenous lasers.

  3. Three delivery modes

Continuous wave 0.5–15 W, single shot from 0.01 to 99.9 s, and pulsed wave at 10–99 Hz — selected to match vessel calibre and pullback technique.

  4. Day-case workflow

A single entry point near the knee under tumescent local anaesthesia, avoiding general anaesthesia and allowing patients to resume normal activity promptly.

  5. Standard fibre coupling

SMA 905 optical connector, 0.22 NA, with 600 µm and 400 µm 3 m fibres. Foot-pedal laser stop.

How it works

The underlying principle

Laser energy at 1470 nm is absorbed by water in the hydrated endothelial and sub-endothelial cells of the vein wall. The resulting heat contracts and collapses the wall, producing vessel occlusion and halting varicosity formation.
